Make a Delicious and Nutritious Gluten-Free Pizza Dough Crust

If you have a gluten intolerance or if you are looking to cut gluten out of your life and diet entirely due to health reasons, you can still eat delicious and nutritious foods with a bit of research and effort. It is even possible to make your very own gluten-free pizza crust to satisfy your cheese and Italian cuisine cravings.

Making a gluten-free pizza can help to not only save on calories, but also to add nutrition that cannot be found in all-purpose flours and recipes for pizza dough that do contain gluten. With this recipe, it is possible to substitute other flours depending on your own health restrictions or your preferences when baking (and taste buds).

Whether you have always loved pizza or if you are looking for a way to add variety to your gluten-free diet, making your own gluten-free pizza crust is not very difficult and only requires a bit of time to ensure your pizza is just as flavorful as pizzas that do contain gluten.

Making the Gluten-Free Pizza Dough Crust

Ingredients –

½ cup GF millet flour
1 cup sorghum flour
½ cup brown rice flour
2 cups tapioca flour (starch)
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. sea salt
2 tsp. xanthan gum
1 packet (about ¼ oz.) active dry yeast
3 tbsp. 1 tsp. organic brown sugar (light if possible)
1 ¼ cup warm water
¼ cup beaten egg whites
¼ cup olive oil
¼ tsp. light rice vinegar

Preparation:

Grease two 12-inch pans (pizza pans) and then lightly dust each one using a gluten-free flour.

Add the flour and dry ingredients into a bowl and whisk them together.

Proof the yeast (in the 1 cup of warm water you have). Add a pinch of sugar to this mixture. Once done, add the yeast with the dry ingredients that you have already mixed together.

Add the vinegar, oil, and eggs to the mixture of yeast and dry ingredients. Beat the dough and mix it together until it is creamy smooth. This dough will resemble the texture of nearly cake batter when prepared and mixed thoroughly and properly.

Divide the dough in half and roll the dough. This process is the longest and most tedious, but if you spend enough time you can create the perfectly even and thin (or thicker) crust that you desire. Wet your palms when you are working with the dough with your hands to avoid getting the dough stuck to you.

Set the dough somewhere warm to rise and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes. In the meantime, pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

After the oven has pre-heated, add the two pizzas (on pizza pans) side by side in the center of your oven. Allow the pizzas to bake until they are golden brown (about 10 minutes). Your gluten-free dough is done!

Additional options:

Remove the dough from the oven and pre-heat your broiler.

Brush the pizza dough with olive oil (and salt/garlic/fresh herbs) and top your pizza with fresh ingredients ranging from vegan cheeses and fresh tomatoes to eggplant, Italian herbs, spinach, mushrooms, and olive oil (optional).

Broil for 4-5 minutes. Do not allow to overcook or burn.
